Frequently Asked Questions

What are my first steps to get started?

If you have never flown in a small aircraft before, we recommend starting with a Discovery Flight. It is a fantastic introduction to general aviation, and the flight time can be logged toward the hours required for your Private Pilot License (PPL).

If you have already taken a Discovery Flight or are ready to begin, your first steps are:

  1. Complete your FAA medical exam.
  2. Enroll in an online ground school.
  3. Contact us to start your training or schedule a Facility Tour.
When can I get started?

You can begin training anytime throughout the year. We have no set start or end dates.

How do I get matched with an instructor?

We use the Inflight Matching Method, a proprietary tool that pairs you with an instructor based on your learning style and personality. This method significantly improves student success rates. Start the process by completing the form here.

Will I follow a syllabus during my training?

Yes. Each certificate or rating includes a custom-designed syllabus to ensure your flight and ground training are organized and efficient.

How do I schedule my flights?

You will use our online scheduling platform, which provides 24/7 access to book flights at your convenience.

How much does flight training cost?

Training costs vary depending on the program and the number of hours required. Costs are made up of aircraft rental fees and instructor fees, billed after each lesson. For a detailed breakdown of our current rates, visit our Pricing page or schedule a Facility Tour and we will walk you through expected costs for your specific goals.

Is fuel included in the aircraft rental rate?

Yes, fuel is included in our aircraft rental rates.

How do I pay for flight training?

We do not require upfront payment for our programs. After each lesson, your account will be billed for that day’s training. We accept cash, checks, and credit and debit cards.

What if I cannot afford flight training right now?

If you do not plan to pay out of pocket, career pilot financing options are available. Planning your finances in advance ensures a smooth training experience.

Do you accept the GI Bill, 529 college savings plans, or other government funding?

As a Part 61 school, we cannot accept funding through the GI Bill or college savings plans. We do accept cash, checks, credit and debit cards, approved scholarships, and financing through approved lenders.

If you are active duty or a veteran, we recommend contacting us to discuss your options and explore approved financing alternatives.

How many lessons should I complete per week?

There is no minimum requirement. However, we recommend scheduling 2 to 3 flights per week for consistency and steady progress.

How quickly will I finish my training?

The pace of your training depends on your schedule and commitment. Our flexible programs allow you to train as quickly or as slowly as you need to meet your goals.

How quickly could I be working for the airlines?

If you train 2 to 3 times per week, it typically takes about one year to earn your Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) certificate. Most CFIs build the remaining hours required for the airlines (1,500 total for Part 61) within 12 to 18 months after that.

Will winter affect my flight training?

Winter in Minnesota does present some scheduling challenges, but training continues year-round. Flying in varied weather conditions is actually a valuable part of your education. Our instructors will work with you to keep your training on track through every season.

Can I transfer hours from another flight school?

Yes. Hours logged at another school count toward FAA certificate requirements. If you are mid-training when you join us, we will review your logbook and existing endorsements during your Consultation to build a plan from where you left off.

Where do I get my aviation medical certificate?

You will need to see an FAA-designated Aviation Medical Examiner (AME). We recommend getting your medical early to confirm your eligibility before investing in training. A local AME we recommend is:

Dr. Sidell
3920 Sunnyside Road, Edina, MN 55424
Phone: 952-926-3002

Do I need perfect eyesight to become a pilot?

No. Requirements depend on the class of medical certificate you need:

  • First-Class Medical Certificate: 20/20 corrected vision
  • Third-Class Medical Certificate: 20/40 vision

If you wear glasses or contacts, you can still qualify. Your AME will confirm what applies to your goals.

How old must I be to start flight training?

You may begin ground and flight training at any age. The minimum age requirements for key milestones are:

  • 16 years old to solo an aircraft
  • 17 years old to earn a Private Pilot License
How old must I be to take a Discovery Flight?

There is no minimum age requirement for Discovery Flights. Younger passengers are welcome with a parent or guardian present.

Do I complete ground school online or in person?

We recommend the Online Ground School courses. These are an online, self-paced program you can complete before or during your flight training.

What is a Discovery Flight?

A Discovery Flight is an introductory flight lesson where you get hands-on time at the controls of a real aircraft with one of our instructors. It is the best way to experience flying before committing to a full training program, and the time logged counts toward your PPL hours.

Learn more and book your Discovery Flight.

Can I bring a passenger on my Discovery Flight?

Yes, you may bring passengers on your Discovery Flight, subject to aircraft weight and balance limits. View our Discovery Flight options for more details.

What is the refund and expiration policy for Discovery Flights?

Discovery Flight purchases are valid for one year from the date of purchase. All sales are final and no refunds are issued. If you received a Discovery Flight as a gift, please contact us to schedule it before it expires.

What programs do you offer?

We offer training for the following certificates and ratings:

Not sure where to start? Schedule a Facility Tour and we will help map out your path.

Do you offer Sport Pilot training?

We do not offer Sport Pilot training at this time. Please view our flight training page for all available courses.

How do I rent one of your aircraft?

To rent one of our aircraft, you must complete an aircraft checkout form and complete at least one flight with an instructor to demonstrate proficiency. Additional flights may be required depending on your familiarity with the aircraft type or if it has been a while since your last flight. Inflight does not guarantee a specific number of hours required to complete a checkout. Schedule a Facility Tour to get started.

Do you sell pilot supplies like logbooks?

We do not sell pilot supplies at this time.

What do I need to do as an international student before starting training?

If you are not a U.S. citizen, you are required to complete the TSA’s Flight Training Security Program (FTSP) before beginning flight training. This is a federal background check process. You can learn more here.

We recommend starting this process early, as approval timelines can vary. Please contact us to discuss your situation and next steps.

Do you assist with student visas or housing?

We do not provide visa sponsorship or housing. We recommend consulting with an immigration attorney for visa guidance. For housing, resources like short-term rental platforms and local apartment search sites are a good starting point. Please reach out if you have specific questions and we will do our best to point you in the right direction.

Do you hire CFIs?

We do hire Certified Flight Instructors. If you are interested in instructing with us, please visit our Careers page.

How many hours do your CFIs come in with, and how long until they reach airline minimums?

Our CFIs typically join us with around 250 hours, the minimum required to earn a CFI certificate under Part 61. From there, most instructors build the hours needed for the airlines (1,500 hours for Part 61, 1,000 for Part 141 graduates) within approximately 12 to 18 months of full-time instructing.
