Safety Management System.
At Inflight, safety is our priority focus. Our SMS program encourages everyone to self-report potentially unsafe actions so we can analyze, improve, and keep aviation safer for all. Your report is strictly confidential. Zero punitive action.
Why SMS?
We want everyone to safely enjoy all the benefits that flying brings.
- FREE ground and flight training when you self-report
- Zero punitive actions to pilots who self-report
- Entry into a quarterly drawing for a $250 Sporty’s Pilot Shop gift certificate
- Strict confidentiality, no sharing with third parties
What is SMS?
Safety Management System (SMS) is becoming a standard throughout the aviation industry worldwide. It is recognized by the Joint Planning and Development Office (JPDO), International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and civil aviation authorities (CAA) and product/service providers as the next step in the evolution of safety in aviation. SMS is also becoming a standard beyond aviation, similar management systems are used in quality, occupational safety and health, security, environment, and other critical areas.
SMS for product/service providers and regulators integrates modern safety risk management and safety assurance concepts into repeatable, proactive systems. SMSs emphasize safety management as a fundamental business process, considered in the same manner as other aspects of business management. Learn more about SMS from the FAA.
What SMS Provides
- A structured means of safety risk management decision making
- A means of demonstrating aviation safety management capability before system failures occur
- Increased confidence in risk controls through structured safety assurance processes
- An effective interface for knowledge sharing between regulator and certificate holder
- A safety promotion framework to support a sound safety culture
Aviation Safety Reporting
Our SMS program aligns with industry best practices and FAA guidance on safety reporting. We use reports to identify trends, improve procedures, and prevent future incidents, not to punish pilots who come forward.
The Administrator of the FAA will not use reports submitted to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration under the Aviation Safety Reporting Program (or information derived therefrom) in any enforcement action, except information concerning accidents or criminal offenses which are wholly excluded from the program.
Reportable Examples
These are just examples. There are numerous things you can report. When in doubt, report. We'd rather know and improve than not.
- Landing with a crosswind and almost went off the runway
- Crept into Class B airspace
- Landed on the wrong runway
- Almost ran the aircraft out of fuel
- Airplane wasn't chocked and rolled from its spot
- Noticed line personnel improperly towing or fueling airplanes
- Instructor professionalism
- Exceeding aircraft limitations
- Possible damage to the aircraft
