T-6 Thunder Airshow

Don’t miss the T-6 Thunder Airshow just before the James J. Hill Days parade, where you can see WWII planes soaring through Downtown Wayzata. The T-6 Thunder planes are 1940s-era aircraft that were used during WWII, the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Only about 200 of the over 22,000 T-6 Thunder planes built are still flying today. The pilots, who have over 100 years of combined flight experience, perform in diamond formations at speeds of 150 mph and fly as close as six feet apart, leaving a smoke trail made of vegetable-based oil. These aerial acrobats have been flying together for over 20 years, and their skills and precision in these aircraft are not to be missed.

Safety
First and foremost, safety should be your top priority at an airshow. Be sure to follow all posted rules and regulations, and stay within designated viewing areas. Keep a safe distance from aircraft and do not cross any barriers or fences. Be aware of your surroundings and listen to announcements from airshow officials. If you have any concerns or questions, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance
Wear Earplugs & Sunscreen
Airshows can be incredibly loud, so it’s a good idea to bring earplugs or noise-canceling headphones to protect your hearing. You can purchase these at the event or bring your own.
Bring A Chair, Blanket & Umbrella
It’s a good idea to bring a chair, blanket, and umbrella to ensure you’re comfortable throughout the day. Some airshows have limited seating, so bringing your own chair gives you a place to sit. A blanket provides some cushioning on hard surfaces in the bleachers, while an umbrella provides shade from the sun or shelter from rain.
