About Chaska

This history of Chaska is deeply rooted in Native American culture, with the first inhabitants being the Mound Builders. This group of people physically moved the land to construct massive, ceremonial bluffs, still visible in many parts of the western suburbs today. By the time the first explorers arrived in the 1700s, Chaska was a popular location for French-Canadian fur traders. Chaska’s first trading post was established early at the turn of the 19th century, marking an important step in the town’s founding. The area, then-known as Little Rapids, was incorporated as a U.S. territory in the mid 1850s, at the same time the first settler, Andrew Holmes, claimed a 20-acre plot of land. With this, a town grew and in 1871, Chaska was officially incorporated as a village. Well-known as a rich location for clay mining, Chaska established itself in the brick industry, becoming an industrial center thanks to its location along the Minnesota River. But, as the 20th century came, investments would grow and other commerce would flourish. The population grew to 2,000 and remained there until the 1950s, when Minneapolis began transitioning into a noticeably more metropolitan layout. Shortly thereafter, a “Jonathan New Town” residential development, or planned community, brought new land, jobs and people to Chaska.

Up through the 2000s and beyond, several new residential and business expansions took place, with 100 to 300 new homes added a year and a redeveloped downtown in the 1980s. Today, Chaska retains its small-town feel but has made many modern updates to provide the best of both worlds.
