About Tonka Bay

Thanks to its location along the golden shores of Lake Minnetonka, Tonka Bay has been a top tourist destination in Minnesota throughout much of its history. Around the same time other area suburbs started to pop up like Shorewood and Excelsior, the first European settler, Peter Gideon, staked his claim along the bay that still bears his name. His soon-thriving apple farm officially put the town of Tonka Bay on the map. Not long after, another settler by the name of Stephen Hull, cleared the wooded areas to create Hull’s Narrows. This allowed boats to navigate between the upper and lower portions of the lake. As such, more and more residents and visitors flocked to the area, including famous governor Alexander Ramsey, who encouraged development of the area. To serve the rising interest in the area, the first hotel was constructed on the lake in 1879, along with several luxury cottages, attracting crowds of boaters, beach-goers and those inclined to love the natural northern wilderness.  Because Tonka Bay has more shoreline than any other suburb located in Lake Minnetonka, more venturists realized the potential of the area, building out large estates, agricultural resources and tourist attractions. And, by 1901, the city was incorporated with local orchard owner, John Wilcox becoming its first mayor. Now that there was an organizational structure in place, the town continued to flourish throughout the 20th century, as prestigious boat clubs, yacht clubs and marinas established themselves along the bay. This attracted lake lovers of all kinds, whether permanently or just for the summer. Today, Tonka Bay remains an affluent suburb, deeply rooted in the boating community. With a small population of approximately 1,500, residents and visitors enjoy access to the many amenities of Lake Minnetonka, along with a quaint downtown, wide open public parks and plenty of other fun things to do.
