About Bloomington

Throughout its history, Bloomington has been central to the development of the Twin Cities and Minnesota as a whole. Because of its connection to the U.S. military via Fort Snelling just to the northeast in neighboring St. Paul, it was one of the earliest-settled communities in the state, dating back to before Minnesota was even incorporated as a territory.  After the Treaty of Traverse des Sioux was reached in the early 1850s, land west of the Mississippi River, including Bloomington, was opened to settlers. The area began attracting non-soldiers in the likes of farmers, capitalists, missionaries, explorers and fur traders, among many others. By the time Minnesota was officially pronounced a U.S. state in 1858, the 25 original residents were able to incorporate their community as the Town of Bloomington. The population grew by the hundreds throughout the last half of the 19th century, as businesses moved in and a community infrastructure was built. While Bloomington remained a mostly small yet prosperous community, it wasn’t until the post World War II boom that the suburb started to take its current form. Thanks to the development of major interstates that allowed easier access to the suburb, upscale, middle-class neighborhoods began to pop up in droves. Just a decade later, the city saw another big addition in the form of the beloved Metropolitan Stadium, once home to the Minnesota Twins and Vikings. For 20 years, Minnesota’s professional sports teams conducted regular-season play at this stadium. But, that wasn’t the only major complex to call Bloomington home. After the final game was played and the stadium was shuttered, the Bloomington Port Authority officially purchased the site and two years later, groundbreaking took place for a new megamall, Mall of America. Although there is so much more to Bloomington than MOA, it’s often tightly associated with the suburb, particularly because it’s the city’s largest employer of about 13,000 people. Today, Bloomington occupies the spot of fifth-largest city in Minnesota in terms of population. Residents and visitors alike enjoy many public amenities, attractive neighborhoods and a friendly community.
