About Hugo

The city of Hugo has come a long way since the pioneer days in which it only occupied three square miles of land. But, when the Burlington Northern Railroad was built through the township in 1868, it affected the course of its history forever. First, its original name, Centerville, came from the railroad station depot that was located in the town. Eventually, over 250 residents broke away from the town due to tax disputes, and incorporated as the Village of Hugo. Throughout the next 100 plus years, the village remained essentially farmland and railroad territory, until in the early 1970s when the Township of Oneka joined Hugo, and helped usher in a new government. The town now had a mayor, as well as a full city council, fire department, police department and other governing bodies. Today, the resident population of Hugo is well over 14,000 people, while covering an area of  over 35 square miles. Not only is it in a great location, close to the many natural attractions in East-Central Minnesota, the community feels tight-knit and friendly even though it’s so big.
