The once rural town for Fun things to do in St. Anthony is now a bustling, first-ring suburb in the Twin Cities metro. Situated directly west of upbeat Northeast Minneapolis and with great access to other suburbs like Columbia Heights and Lauderdale, this city is an attractive place to both live and visit.
About
As one of the oldest suburbs of the Twin Cities, the history of St. Anthony’s begins in 1838, when a Fort Snelling storekeeper claimed his plot of land east of St. Anthony Falls. Due to its close proximity to both St. Paul and Minneapolis, it became essential in the state’s milling and trade industries. Later in 1858, the city was officially mapped out and organized as the Township of St. Anthony. Prominent real estate developer, Al Forsyth, bought what is today known as St. Anthony Boulevard and petitioned the city to incorporate the street into Minneapolis. However before that could take place, the township managed to incorporate as a village, even though it was still largely a rural area. The decision upset many, but was ultimately ruled legal by the Minnesota Supreme Court. Thus, another page in the St. Anthony history book turns. Over the next several decades, St. Anthony Village’s population grew rapidly, attracting a more white-collar population that slowly overtook the largely agricultural town. In 1973, along with several other towns across Minnesota, the town officially switched from municipality to city, supplying its current title of the “City of St. Anthony Village.” Today, the St. Anthony has a smaller population of about 10,000 and occupies parts of both Hennepin and Ramsey counties. For those that live here, there are a nice mix of amenities and friendly neighborhoods, and for those visiting, there are more than enough recreation, dining and other things to do to stay entertained.
